LEADERSHIP

This is more of a journal entry for me than anything. Just recently I was put in as the first counselor in Young Women's (for those that are not familiar with the program, it's geared towards the young girls in our church between the ages of 12-18. For more information, please see this website). It's been a complete 180 for me as I've been in primary, well, forever. As much as I LOVE our primary kids and working with them on a weekly basis, I was pretty excited to work with older kids. I've always thought it would be some much fun to be in Young Women's and bond with the girls. Well, now that I'm actually IN Young Women's, I have to say, I feel a little overwhelmed and inadequate. We've been in our ward for three? years now and that entire time we've been in primary. As a result, I don't really know many people in the ward. Which is hard when you suddenly have to learn the names of 30+ girls. I'm also learning that while I thought I had a pretty good grasp of the gospel, there is so much more I need to learn. I have to keep reminding myself that obviously the Lord placed me in Young Women's because right now it's where I need to be. I also need to remind myself that it's okay to not know everything or everyone right off and it will take time. But it's so hard! Since we have all new advisors, we had a training meeting tonight. The YW president read the following talk by Henry B. Eyring that I absolutely loved:

You Came for the Savior

Let me encourage you by telling you a story. It was told to me by my father. He told it with the intent to chuckle at himself. It was a story about his trying to do his duty, just the way you try to do your duty.

Now you have to know a little bit about my father. His name was Henry Eyring, like mine. He had done some of the things students of this university are preparing to be able to do. His work in chemistry was substantial enough to bring the honors some of you will someday have, but he was still a member of a ward of the Church with his duty to do. To appreciate this story, you have to realize that it occurred when he was nearly eighty and had bone cancer. He had bone cancer so badly in his hips that he could hardly move. The pain was great.

Dad was the senior high councilor in his stake with the responsibility for the welfare farm. An assignment was given to weed a field of onions, so Dad assigned himself to go work on the farm.

Dad never told me how hard it was, but I have met several people who were with him that day. I talked to one of them on the phone the other night to check the story. The one I talked to said that he was weeding in the row next to Dad through much of the day. He told me the same thing that others who were there that day have told me. He said that the pain was so great that Dad was pulling himself along on his stomach with his elbows. He couldn't kneel. The pain was too great for him to kneel. Everyone who has talked to me has remarked how Dad smiled, and laughed, and talked happily with them as they worked in that field of onions.

Now, this is the joke Dad told me on himself, afterward. He said he was there at the end of the day. After all the work was finished and the onions were all weeded, someone asked him, "Henry, good heavens! You didn't pull those weeds, did you? Those weeds were sprayed two days ago, and they were going to die anyway."

Dad just roared. He thought that was the funniest thing. He thought it was a great joke on himself. He had worked through the day in the wrong weeds. They had been sprayed and would have died anyway.

When Dad told me this story, I knew how tough it was. So I said to him, "Dad, how could you make a joke out of that? How could you take it so pleasantly?"

He said something to me that I will never forget, and I hope you won't. He said, "Hal, I wasn't there for the weeds."

Now, you'll be in an onion patch much of your life. So will I. It will be hard to see the powers of heaven magnifying us or our efforts. It may even be hard to see our work being of any value at all. And sometimes our work won't go well.

But you didn't come for the weeds. You came for the Savior. And if you pray, and if you choose to be clean, and if you choose to follow God's servants, you will be able to work and wait long enough to bring down the powers of heaven."

As in everything in life, I'm sure my time in YW will be hard, overwhelming and so completely worth it. I know it's going to take time, but luckily I have such a great support group with not only the women I am working with, but also with a wonderful husband. For those that have been in YW, what has/has not worked for you? Any advice or suggestions?

11th ANNIVERSARY - 2012

Today is a sick day for me. Who get's bronchitis in the summer? Seriously.....having a cold in the summer is a total oxymoron! Anyway, since I have a little extra time on my hands I thought I would cross some things off my to do list. One of these things is to blog our anniversary trip to Vegas. Um, yeah, our anniversary was back in February. Sigh. Oh well!

The Bubs and I try to take turns planning our anniversary extravaganzas. Sometimes we'll do it together, but a lot of times we alternate years. Because this was my year I started to look at different options the latter part of 2011. I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do until I received an email about some upcoming Broadway musicals that were coming to Utah. The Bubs and I are both music nuts. It doesn't matter if it's concerts, musicals, the symphony, we just love to go! It got me to thinking about musicals I still wanted to see and Phantom of the Opera was right at the top. I knew the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas had built a theater specifically for Phantom, so after looking at the prices, I knew where our anniversary trip was going to be. Now, normally I'm not a Vegas person. I mean, c'mon, if you don't drink or gamble Vegas isn't exactly the funnest place. Plus there are only so many times you can walk the strip. AND it's super dirty. But, I am SO glad we went. We ended up having so much fun! We left early Tuesday morning and got in a couple of hours before the show started. We were going to stay at the Venetian, but decided to go across the street to the Mirage as the rooms were a lot cheaper. After getting all fancied up, we headed to the show. They don't allow you to take pics in the theater (which by the was is AMAZING) so this is the best we could before we got chastised!
On our way over to the Venetian
The show was AMAZING. Couple of things I would have done different. We were on the front row so we didn't get to see some things the other patrons did. The Phantom came out of the chandelier (which is in the middle of theater) a couple of times and we didn't know. Also, the chandelier crashing which was pretty cool. One nice thing is that a couple of times the actors would come down onto the main floor and sing. One of the times they were right in front of us.

The next day we bummed around Vegas for a bit and went to the wax museum. I've never been to one before and although it was kinda creepy, we had a blast walking through it. I also got to marry George Clooney and feel up Bradley Cooper. Win win, right?
My dress was obviously off the rack. It was also little too big, but I wasn't planning on getting married again. But, he was there, I was there, it was just pure magic!
This pic was for my little brother, Steve. Growing up we used to call him Stevie Wonder so I cracked up when I saw the wax Stevie Wonder. Of course I had to take a pic of the two of us!
I don't know how Obama can sit there and smile. Obviously there was a state of emergency that required the use of the "red phone!"
There are seriously so many other pictures I could post of us in the wax museum, but then it would REALLY be picture overload! After the museum we headed out to the streets of Vegas which can be entertainment in itself. Every time we go to Vegas there seems to be more and more street performers. It reminds me of San Francisco which I love. Plus, it's free entertainment, right?
I swear this Hello Kitty was a guy. First off, it had to be the tallest Hello Kitty I have EVER seen. Plus it had some pretty sweet break dance moves. I know girls can break dance, but the way it moved you just knew it had to be a guy.
A little shopping. LOVE the M & M factory!

When we were checking out of the Mirage we noticed the different shows that were being held at the hotel. One of them was Love - a tribute to the Beatles by Cirque du Soleil. I've always wanted to see a Cirque du Soleil show and the Bubs LOVES the Beatles (me, not so much) so I thought, why the heck not? The tickets were kind of pricey (especially as we were getting them last minute) but worth EVERY penny. We had so much stinkin' fun and LOVED the show. We both said that while we thought Phantom was amazing, we thought Love was even better. They were huge sticklers about not taking pictures in the theater, so we didn't get anything good.

After Love we headed back up to St. George, Utah where we bummed around for a couple of days and then headed back home. All in all it was a GREAT trip. The weather was perfect - not super warm, but warm enough where you could wear shorts. The shows were awesome and amazingly enough, Vegas was not super crowded. You could actually walk on the strip without running into people. Imagine that! Love ya Bubbies and thanks for going on so many great adventures with me - including the biggest one of all that started 11 years ago!

5KS AND FESTIVALS

Look at this smexy group! Pretty hot for 6 in the morning, right? This past week our little city has been celebrating it's founders day and Saturday morning found us at the park waiting to run! Er, walk for me I guess! The Bubs has recently started training again (he had to hold off for a while due to an injury) and thought the Clinton City 5k would be a good start to see where he's at. Well, he's at a pretty dang good place because he ended up placing first in his age division. Isaac and Lou decided they wanted to join the party as well (can you really blame them?) and lo and behold, Isaac placed first as well in HIS age division. Guess Lou and I just have some pretty dang awesome men! Lou and I became "walkers" (tee hee - get it, walkers? Zombies? No? Allrighty, never mind then. Sigh. Hey, I thought it was HILARIOUS at 6 in the morning!) the day before the race. After a leisurely breakfast and nice (tiny) little nap, it was a great morning!

That night found the Bubs and I at the Deer Valley Music Festival in Park City, Utah. I had never been to the music festival before up there (it's all outdoors in GORGEOUS scenery) and we had so much fun! The music festival is all about teaming up the Utah Symphony Orchestra with different singers/groups. Last night was the kickoff and they collaborated the orchestra with James Delisco to celebrate the music of Michael Jackson. I'm not a huge Michael Jackson fan, but the Bubs liked him, so I thought win win! It was a blast! I was a little worried about the weather as it's been so crappy here lately (not that I'm complaining as we need the rain!) and the concert was rain or shine. We've been to outdoor concerts before in the rain and it's kind of miserable. Lucky for us the weather held for the most part (we did get a few sprinkles towards the end) and it was even tolerable cold wise. I think one of the best parts had to be one of the other concert goers. I don't know if this kid spent HOURS watching Michael Jackson dance on youtube or music videos, but he was dancing his little heart out. He was actually pretty good, and bless him provided some GREAT entertainment. I'm so glad we got tickets (it was more of a spur of the moment thang) and will DEFINITELY be going up again for some other concerts. Getting out was a joke, so I think next time we will make a weekend of it and just get a hotel room up there.
(Can you tell we were a teensy bit bored waiting for the concert to start?)
Okay, so one really quick funny story about this. The Bubs might kill me, but I thought it was hilarious. See the second guy walking up the middle with the black jacket and colored shirt? Well, let's just say the concert last night was full of alternative lifestyle goers. The Bubs had stood up to take a pic of the concert and the guy in the jacket/colored shirt TOTALLY checked him out which made crack up. What can I say? My man is a hottie and obviously I'm not the only one that thinks so!

4TH OF JULY IDEAS

Can you believe the 4th of July is right around the corner? Where has the time gone? As you can probably tell from previous posts, I usually try to do a little something for each holiday at work and for church. It's usually something small because while I have a work credit card and can put the work purchases on it, I still have a budget I need to stick too and they don't pay for my non-work related goodies (of course!) But, I found some cute things out in blog land and then on the way to work this morning thought of a couple more things. I thought I would post them so you can use them as well! These are perfect for last minute!

For both primary and scouts we are going to be talking about America, the flag and what freedom means. After which we are going to be playing the bingo game I found here. How stinkin' cute are the pieces? Loved them and loved them even more when I got them back from the printers! I also looked around and was originally going to give the following out for work / church: (if you like them, you can find them here. She has already made up the tags which is an added bonus!) But, them I found these:
and thought perfect! Snaps are pretty inexpensive (in fact, for my Utah friends, I found a box of 40 at either Harmons or Macey's grocery store for $10). You can find the tags here. Even better? They have tags made up for both boxes and for the top of ziploc bags.

Last year for work/church I got boxes of sparklers (you can usually find boxes of 6 for about $2-$3) and put "Hope your 4th sparkles with fun." I also thought about getting small bags of different fireworks and throwing a note on it that said, "Red, White & Boom! Happy 4th of July!" You could also get the glowsticks (I found a tube of 50 at Macey's grocery store for $2.99) and say, "Hope your 4th glows with fun!" One other idea is to get the smoke bombs and say, "Hope your 4th is smokin' fun!" Super cheesy, but both kids and adults LOVE this kind of stuff! Anyway, hopefully you can get some ideas of your own and I hope everyone has a very happy (and safe!) 4th of July!

JUNE VISITING TEACHING

with a little scouts thrown in! For June I printed out the adorable printable found here. The Bubs and I were recently called to be the Wolf den leaders and we were going to visit the newest Wolf scout. Well, I just happen to visit teach the newest Wolf scout's mom, so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone. Since this was a little last minute, I ended up just grabbing a loaf of bread and some whipped raspberry honey butter from Great Harvest. But, for my other two ladies I think I'll probably try the cinnamon honey butter recipe she has. It sounds yummy! Not too shabby for last minute (although it would have been cuter with some ribbon!)

Like I mentioned, we were recently put in scouts (along with our current calling as primary teachers). I have mixed feelings about it. Scouts is one calling I NEVER wanted. But, some of the boys we have are kids from our very first primary class when we were called three years ago. So, it's kind of fun to be working with them again! Jack is one such kid. Love him! He's such a sweetie and to this day will come up and give us the biggest hugs when he see's us in sharing time. We were going to his house to welcome him as our newest scout and meeting the previous den leader so she could give us a run down of what the calling entails. I didn't want to go over empty handed (I know, I know - hey, it's me!) so I hurried and threw this together.....

I thought it turned out cute and will probably use it again. It was fairly inexpensive and what kid doesn't love soda and gum (can you see the A & W root beer peeping out from behind the gum?) Happy June everyone!

CHOOSE JOY

Life is interesting. I don't know if it's because I'm in a reflective mood, because some unexpected happenings popped up this past week or because there are some new changes coming, but it's made me take re-evaluate some aspects of my life. There are so many different ways the actions of not only us but also others can influence how we look at things. How we react to things. Even sometimes how we choose to live our lives. Sometimes that's a good thing. Often times, though, it's not.

I found the above saying on a blog one day (please, ignore the blob er, reflection in the glass) and loved it. I would love to give credit where it's due, but I honestly cannot remember which blog I was on. Anyway, after printing it off and pairing it with the adorable orange vase I found, I put it by my kitchen sink. I wanted some place where I could see it on a daily basis for that kick in the butt I sometimes often times need. Life goes by way too fast and sometimes I find myself wishing it away. You know what I mean. It's the small and simple things that often bring you the most joy. But, how often do we take time out to enjoy those things? So, with new changes coming and life becoming even more hectic (and no, I'm not making any baby announcements), this post is a reminder to me to take time out, even for a minute or two and just choose joy.

HAPPY 60TH MARILYN!

Sorry, the following is a bit of a picture overload! The Bubs mom turned 60 in May and in honor of that, his dad decided to throw a big surprise party for her. Now, although the Bub's dad was "planning" the party, he wasn't really "planning" the party, if ya know what I mean! I mean, c'mon, he's a guy! And although some guys are GREAT at that, Gerald, um, isn't! So, the Bub's little sis and I decided to take over and decided on a 50's theme as she was born in 1952. We didn't have a ton of time to throw this little shin-dig together so I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. Although there were some hiccups that day (such as the Bub's dad not inviting anyone, forgetting to get tables and chairs and the guest of honor being a couple of hours late) I think overall everyone had a great time (especially with the photo booth they brought in for the occasion!)

Isn't this great? It's made out of records and coke glasses found at the dollar store. The Bub's sister found something like it on pinterest and of course we HAD to recreate it! I think it was my favorite decoration by far!

My very cute and creative sis-in-law made the cake and cup cakes (which were delicious!)

It was a little windy that day, thus the ghetto taping job of all the tablecloths. We'll just ignore that part, m'kay?

These were from the photo booth (which was SUCH a hit! Especially with the kids!)

The Bubs and P (our nephew - isn't he such a cutie?)

I had so much fun putting this party together and I think the birthday girl was super surprised....what do you think?

BIRTHDAY COUNTDOWN

See this guy? Yeah, he's pretty much the best. Seriously. Such a great guy. I'm so grateful to be married to him and have him in my life. He's my best friend and I really appreciate all he does for me. For my birthday this year he started a birthday countdown on facebook ten days prior to the "big day." I wanted to make sure I journal them so I don't forget!

Day 1: Her eyes. When I would meet a girl for the first time I would first check out her eyes. If you have ever talked to Maris, you would notice she has the most amazing blue eyes. They are really easy to look at.

Today is day 2: Creativity... I may have married the most craft talented person ever. I whine and moan about our craft store/ downstairs bedroom, but I am simply amazed at what she can manage to put together. If you have not seen her blog, you should check it out. She does some "cute" things.

Day 3: Laugh! A lot of people say laughter is contagious, well I think Marisa's laugh is contagious. Sometimes when we are hanging out, we get what we call "the stupids" which is when we laugh for no reason at all... uncontrollably. Her laugh can get a little crazy sometimes, and it just cracks me up

Day 4: Encouragement! It seems no matter what I choose to do, Maris is my #1 cheerleader. I'm not the most "studious" person in the world, and while I someday would like to go back to school, she doesn't force the issue. She always tells me " whatever makes me happy". I love to run, and I am my #1 critic, but she always says how good of a job I do, even if I think it is crap. Thanks babe for always backing me 100%!

Day 5: Thoughtfulness... You ever hear the expression, that person carries a heart the size of their head in their chest? That's my missus. Seems like she's always doing something for someone. Often with out the thought of any reward.

Day 6: Positivity... When I think of positivity, I not only think of being happy, it's more than that. To me it's making the best of whatever you have, sometimes making the best out of the worst. We've been through a lot in our marriage. At times I think the worst at the worst. Maris has the mindset that everything happens for a reason, and everything will work out in the end. I appreciate that, especially since I sometimes attack issues with what some might not call a level head.

Day 7! Hard work! Probably one of my favorite of Marisa's many amazing traits is her work ethic. She has an amazing motor that keeps going. She pretty much has a 5 course meal of things to do all the time, and it seems she is always adding to it. It is important to clarify that activity does not = productivity. However she is extremely productive. She always seems to get it all done, all the time, with time to spare. She is one truly amazing go getter. =)

Day 8: Smile! Back in the day, when I would meet a girl for the first time, the first 2 things I look at are the eyes, and mouth. Eyes, because when you talk to someone, you look them in the eye, you don't want to be looking at a 2 eyed cyclops. Mouth, because when the person smiles you don't want a snaggletooth to look at. I think Marisa has the most beautiful smile. She hates being in pictures, but I would like more of her, just so I can have one more picture of that amazing smile. (:

ay 9: Kissing! Maris just happens to be the best kisser, well of course maybe besides myself, this side of the Milky Way. I'm the type of person, that when I see something I want, I go after it. So with this in mind, after our first date I tried to "roll in". I ended up getting rolled off! Undeterred, I got mine a day later. I was persistent! When I was in the young men's presidency in a previous ward, I gave a lesson on the law of chastity. I told them I never kissed my wife until we knelt across the alter in the temple. They all thought that was neat, until I told them that until that point, she was my girlfriend and we made out all the time. Best lips ever!

Day 10: As you can see over the last few days, Marisa has a lot of amazing qualities. All you men wish you could have her, and all you girls wish you could be her. My favorite thing about her is her individuality. We are all different, and unique in our own way. And she is something really special. All the qualities mentioned previously, plus many more which I did not list make up who she is. My mission president said when I date someone who is too good for me, marry her! I definately married up! Happy Burfday Baby! I love you!

See....like I said. He's the best!

ICE CREAM DELIGHT

First off, happy Mother's Day! I hope everyone has had a wonderful day! I made both dinner and dessert tonight for our family dinner and thought I would post the dessert part. Because c'mon, that's USUALLY the best part, right? The Bubs doesn't like cake, so usually for his birthday I order or make pie for him. I ran across this recipe last year and KNEW he would love it. It's made out of ice cream sandwiches, what's not to love? Well, okay, that's the other reason I made this recipe. It's made out of ice cream sandwiches - I'm not such a fan of them. So I knew I wouldn't be super tempted to eat it. Win win, right? Ironically enough, I received an email from my cute sister-in-law today asking for the recipe, so Britt, this post is for you!
What you will need:

24 Ice Cream Sandwiches
12 oz Whipped Topping
Fudge Topping
Caramel Topping
1 pgk Oreos
4 Skor Bars (I couldn't find Skor, so I used Heath instead).

**These would be great with any sort of candy combination. I think next time I make them I will use peanut butter cups or maybe even cookie dough. Hmm.....the possibilities!

Unwrap the ice cream sandwiches and make your first layer (it will take about 12 or so sandwiches. My pan was bigger, so I ended up using more than 24 sandwiches because I needed fillers)
Add a layer of whip cream and then top with caramel, fudge, crushed up Heath/Skor bars and Oreos
Now, at this point you COULD just leave the cake as is. BUT, why would you want to do that when you can add another layer of yumminess? I said you COULD not that you SHOULD!
Finish that bad boy off with another layer of whip cream, caramel, fudge, Heath bar and Oreos and you have one sinful dessert! Just a warning, this can be a little messy to make and even messier to eat! It's also super rich, so a little will go a long way! This was our finished product (my nieces got in on the action at the end). Enjoy!
